Mable Griffin letter to Ben Knight from Mineral Wells, Texas, December 19, 1918 Dear Ben, I just got your letter which was written the 14th of November this afternoon. It was sent to Vineyard and then back to M. W. I surely was glad to get it. Your Father has had two letters from you since I have come home. I should have been in, Decation? This week, but as the institute was indefinitely postponed I came home Sunday.
Virgil Chever, He's nineteen, brought me to Perrin in car and as roads were so rough we come on to M. W. by train. Surely surprised everyone. As Sunday is a warm day we are going walking this after noon. You are not the only happy people over the outcome of this war. We are crazily happy. As far as the school is concerned. I am doing fine. The boys are too loving. I've about five that become tiresome, only children though. From ages of sixteen to nineteen. Quarrel over whose time it is to take me places. I go and go and go. From Friday four until Sunday after twelve.
I know the French girls are pretty, as all I ever saw were. Are they not rather impulsive? My, how I wish you could come home Xmas. Now don't forget my souvenir, and don't make it a French girl please. Yes most American girls are fickle, but a few boys are, or at least I've found two or three who told falsehoods to their supposedly best friends. Now I know you don't, so forget it. I am afraid you can't read this. This is all the ink I could find and I am nervous besides.. I've my old car fixed up again, so hurry and let me show you all the interesting places near here. I've not driven in it for two months. Mama got us a Victrola for Xmas so we will have music when you get home. All the school children think you are my brother. I talk of you so often. Hurry and come home before school closes for I've promised to show you and you're not to disappoint us. Blanch is teaching this week.
Did your Father send you a Christmas box? Why did you not let me send something also Got a picture of Lovie today. He is very pretty Mother says your pictures won't be as pretty, But she has not seen your picture yet. Has she? We have roses now. Wish you could see them.
It is ten o'clock so I will say "good night." Lots of love and best wishes until I see you. Mabel
